Printed Electronics applies printing technology to make electronic components with conductive polymers or organic materials on the substrates. This new method will make the new functions of electronics and applications out of current products. In addition, productions of these new electronics are cheaper and require less sophisticated processes. Leading countries in electronics (e.g. USA, Japan, Taiwan, and EU) are working so hard to develop this new industry. It is at very early stage, Thailand can also catch the opportunity. With the complete infrastructure from upstream to downstream industries from Petrochemical, Printing and Electronics, it is sufficient to start our development in Organic and Printed Electronics industry in Thailand. In the latest research, there are various R&D activities in various academic institutes including petrochemical and printing industry. Research and Development of Organic and Printed Electronics will require multidiscipline, for examples, material science, polymer, nanotechnology, electrical engineering, electronics, quantum physics, printing technology, and surface engineering.
Establishment of Thai Organic and Printed Electronics Innovation Center is to locate major infrastructure of the country, and to create a consortium for collaborations. The center will invest continuously in infrastructure and equipment to facilitate R&D, and start-up companies will be encouraged to establish premises in “Innovation Cluster 2” of “Thailand Science Park”.
A group of founders expected that Organic and Printed Electronics (OPE) will influence Thailand Electronic Industry, firstly, in “Hybrid Electronics” shortly and will finally transform it to be “Printed Electronics. Some OPE products (e.g. RFID tags, Displays) will take portions of the markets. And in Thailand, which is agricultural based economy and food processing country, Smart Packaging will have a very high potential.
